Your Container Might Be at Risk!

Due to attacks on commercial ships by Yemeni Houthis at the entrance of the Red Sea, extended container transit times may increase the risk of spoilage and damage for certain cargo. As widely known, these attacks have led many ships to reroute their journeys via the Cape of Good Hope instead of the Suez Canal. Container ships, which carry goods from thousands of different companies, have become primary targets because of their larger impact. As a result, container ships have changed their routes more frequently than other vessel types. This situation has not only increased costs but also significantly extended transit times.

Extended Transit Times Have Become More Common in Recent Years
In March 2021, the Ever Given container ship, operated by Evergreen, ran aground in the Suez Canal, blocking it for six days. During the pandemic, we also witnessed delays due to container shortages, voyage disruptions, and operational issues. Cargo often remained in warehouses, ports, and transshipment hubs for extended periods.

The Longer the Delay, the Greater the Risk
Unforeseen events like these have resulted in longer transit times for containers in recent years. While some cargo is not affected by extended transit times, others are highly time-sensitive. In such cases, it is crucial for importing companies to have an authorized third-party inspector oversee the unloading process, starting from the breaking of the container seals. This ensures that any potential damages can be identified, and claims can be properly handled through insurance or contractual agreements with responsible parties.

Supervised Unloading Is Essential
In conclusion, extended transit times increase the risk of spoilage and damage for certain cargo. To facilitate potential claims and activate insurance coverage, we strongly recommend that importing companies conduct container seal opening and unloading under official supervision. Additionally, we advise Freight Forwarders and Customs Brokers to inform their clients about this precaution before the containers are opened.
